Settled and fortified first by Númenóreans in the Second Age. It became the mightiest and greatest fortress of its kind in Middle-Earth and was the center of the their sea power. By 2280 of the Second Age, it was the Númenóreans home "away from home". During Númenor's moral decline, Umbar became a fortress of the King's Men, who after were called the Black Númenóreans. After the Drowning of Númenor, the Faithful came to the shores of Middle-Earth and there built the Realms in Exile, Arnor and Gondor. In the Third Age, the Black Númenóreans had Umbar to themselves, but were at constant rilvalry with the Men of Gondor. In 933 of the Third Age Eärnil I, second of the "Ship-kings" of Gondor took Umbar by siege. Umbar was taken again by the renegades in 1448 and became a Corsair state. For almost 400 years Umbar remain this way, until the 28th King of Gondor decided to take out the pirates. Telumehtar was then called "Umbardacil", meaning "Victor of Umbar", for he won such victory against the Corsairs of Umbar in that battle in 1810 of the Third Age. Next in line to capture Umbar was the Haradrim, allies of the Corsairs. They grew very powerful and gave aid to the Corairs to overthrow Umbardacil and then kept Umbar's might to themselves. The Southrons continued to create distress for Gondor's coastlines throughout the years, even into the times of the War of the Ring. Attemping then, as they had many times as before, to raid Gondor from the South and they were defeated each time they tried this. Though it is said that when Sauron was destroyed, along with the One Ring, that Umbar became again a peaceful harbor and center of trade, leaving the sea-power of the Corsairs greatly diminished. - OF THE CORSAIRS OF UMBAR - The Corsairs of Umbar were all rebels to the Kings of Gondor. They were pirates and held great sea-power along the costal areas. Eldacar was to succeed his father and become the King, but Castamir the Usurper, being in blood closer to the crown (for Eldacar was born being of a lesser race on his mother's side), rebelled against this and the great civil war in Gondor, the Kin-Strife, came to hand. Now Castamir, Captain of the Ships, Captain of the Fleets, was followed by many, and eventually caused Eldacar to flee to his mothers kin in the North. In this event, the crown of Gondor was left for Castamir's taking. Many evil deeds did Castamir and his descendants do upon Gondor throughout the ramaining years of the Corsairs power. Castamir slew one of Eldacar's sons, and he destroyed alot that was held fair in Gondor. In those events, he lost alot who followed him. His followers had seen he did not care for Gondor itself, but just its crown. Ten years later Eldacar returned with a great strength he gathered in the North. Castamir was slain but his sons and thier men gained way back to Umbar. Umbar had always been a refugee of the Black Númenóreans, and with Castamir's descendants among them, they were able to strike at Gondor more often, and with more power. The Corsairs of Umbar won great renown with Castamir's great grandsons leading them. It was in a battle at Pelargir that they slew Minardil, Eldacar's other son. Umbar was now at constant war with Gondor, the Corsairs came as far as Anfalas and here caused even more pain. Now Telumehthar, son of King Tarondor, Tarondor being the newphew of Telemar, whose father was indeed Minardil, gathered a great number of Men in 1810. Telumehtar stormed Umbar to avenge Minardil, and he did bring his Men to victory and together they held Umbar long. The descendants of Castamir the Usurper were slain, and what little remained had fled. The Corsairs then seeked the aid of their allies from the past, the Men of Harad. The Haradrim helped the Corsairs, and in turn kept Umbar for their own. The power and might of the Corsairs of Umbar was fading . . . Throughout the years that followed, battles were always fought along the southern borders of Gondor, but little of those tales are known, or ever came into a legend... None so great as the ones of old concerning Castamir the Usurper, and the original Corsairs of Umbar. Though in the War of the Ring, Gondor feared not only the Dark Lord in the East, but of the Corsairs of Umbar in the South..
